After Dark од Haruki Murakami

 

After Dark е типична Murakami новела во која тој го истражува пространството на ноќта и начинот на кој границите на реалното и нереалното се претопуваат под превезот на темнината. Оттуѓеноста кај модерниот јапонец, но и воопшто кај кој било жител на нашиов модерен свет, е повторно главна тема. Одлично ја доловува ноќната атмосфера каде секој е оставен сам со себе! Во тој дел од денот се симнуваат маските наменети за светот и тогаш сите сме оние вистинските. Но тогаш испливуваат и вистинските проблеми на личноста и се соочуваме со себеси ма колку страшни и да сме си.

Дејствието се одвива во една ноќ и ги прати двата лика Takahashi и Mari кои талкајќи низ Токио се фокусираат на приказната за Eri, сесрата на Mari, која е потоната во долг неколкумесечен сон. Често приказната ги преминува границите на реалното, уште една типична одлика на новелите на Murakami исто како и сеприсутните референци кон познати џез мелодии на кои Murakami  е очигледно голем фан.

Иако ова е последна новела од Murakami, таа претставува одличен почеток за запознавање со неговиот книжевен опус бидејќи содржи во себе многу од неговите типични литературни белези.

Should the aliens ever descend in their sleek ships and train their great scanners on our population centers, capturing our deeds and dreams for transmission back to cosmic headquarters, let’s hope they show us the patient tenderness of Haruki Murakami, the Japanese novelist, who himself is not wholly of this world. In a dozen books on our existence here — not in Japan or any special nation but as children of gravity, as earthlings — Murakami has done as good a job as any contemporary writer of pleading humanity’s poignant case before the court of whoever may be out there. Have mercy, oh interstellar lords. We’re lonesome and small and we know not what we do, only that we’re obliged by God or nature to bathe, dress, eat and keep on doing it.

After Dark is perhaps the closest Murakami has yet come to composing a pure tone-poem. Aspects of his earlier styles - the dark, surreal farce of A Wild Sheep Chase, the mournful realism of Norwegian Wood, the supernatural yearning of Sputnik Sweetheart - here intermingle in a story that spells out less but evokes as much if not more. Exposition is set to the minimum, while the mood-colouring is virtuosic. Morning, at the end of the novel, is an extraordinary blend of the hesitant blossoming of romance and an ode to renewal. The novel could be an allegory of sleep, a phenomenology of time, or a cinematic metafiction. Whatever it is, its memory lingers.
